🌼 Care & Cultivation Guide
Cultivation Tips
🌞 Light
Bright, indirect light.
Tolerates dappled sun but avoid direct midday exposure.
Outdoor shade or indoor east-facing windows are ideal.
🌡 Temperature
Evergreen types: Intermediate to warm (15-28 °C).
Deciduous types: Cool to intermediate (10-25 °C).
Many species are hardy to mild frosts when dormant.
💧 Watering
During Growth (Spring-Autumn):
Keep soil evenly moist, never soggy.
Water thoroughly when topsoil starts to dry.
Dormancy (Winter for deciduous types):
Reduce watering significantly once leaves yellow and fall.
Keep barely moist to prevent pseudobulb shriveling.
🌫 Humidity & Airflow
Humidity: 50-70%.
Good airflow prevents fungal issues, especially in summer.
🪴 Potting Mix
Use a rich, well-draining terrestrial orchid mix:
Loam or fine bark
Perlite or pumice
Leaf mold or peat moss
A small amount of composted material
Tip: You can also grow Calanthe in the ground in mild climates with shaded, moist soil.
🌿 Repotting
Every 1-2 years, just before new growth starts (early spring).
Remove old media, divide if needed (make sure each division has at least 2-3 pseudobulbs).
🌼 Fertilizer
Use a balanced fertilizer (e.g. 20-20-20) during the active growing season.
Feed every 2 weeks at half strength.
Stop fertilizing in fall when growth slows or leaves start to yellow.
🌺 Flowering
Typically blooms in spring to early summer.
Flower spikes emerge from the base near new shoots.
Long-lasting flowers in white, pink, yellow, purple, and orange depending on species/hybrid.
🔁 Dormancy Care (for Deciduous Species)
After flowering, reduce watering as leaves fade.
Stop feeding and keep dry and cool (but not freezing).
Resume watering in spring when new growth appears.
