🌿 Rhynchostylis gigantea Cultivation Guide

📍 Overview

Rhynchostylis gigantea is a tropical, monopodial orchid native to Southeast Asia. It produces highly fragrant flowers (often in white, red, pink, or spotted patterns) that bloom in dense, pendulous clusters. It's a slow grower, but very rewarding once mature.

☀️ Light

  • Needs bright, filtered light—similar to Vanda orchids, but slightly less intense.

  • Avoid harsh midday sun; leaves will burn easily.

  • Ideal placement: near an east- or west-facing window with sheer curtain.

  • Leaves should be medium green—not dark (too little light) or yellowish (too much).

🌡️ Temperature

  • Warm to hot growing:

    • Day: 25–35 °C (77–95 °F)

    • Night: 18–22 °C (64–72 °F)

  • Protect from cold drafts or temps below 15 °C (59 °F).

💧 Watering

  • Likes daily watering in warm weather—especially when mounted or in baskets.

  • Water early in the day to allow leaves to dry before night.

  • In cooler months, reduce frequency but do not let it dry out completely.

🌬️ Humidity & Airflow

  • Thrives in 60–80% humidity.

  • Needs strong air circulation to prevent rot, especially around the roots and crown.

  • Ideal for open baskets or mounted culture with plenty of airflow.

🪴 Potting Options

  • Often grown bare root, in wooden baskets, or mounted on slabs for maximum air movement.

  • If potted, use very coarse media like large bark, charcoal, or coconut husk chips.

  • Avoid water-retentive media; roots need to dry slightly between waterings.

🌱 Fertilizer

  • During active growth (spring to fall), apply balanced orchid fertilizer (20-20-20 or similar) weekly at ¼ to ½ strength.

  • In winter, reduce feeding to once every 2–4 weeks.

  • Flush roots with plain water monthly to avoid salt buildup.

🌸 Flowering

  • Blooms once per year, typically in late fall to winter.

  • Flower spikes emerge from the base of the plant.

  • Each spike carries up to 30+ fragrant flowers that last 3–4 weeks
