1 Plant bloom size , pot 4"
Also known as Rothschild’s Slipper Orchid, this is one of the most exotic and sought-after Paphiopedilums, native to Mount Kinabalu in Borneo. It is a terrestrial/lithophytic species and requires specific care to thrive.
Habitat: Found in shady, limestone-rich mountain slopes (600–1200m elevation).
Type: Terrestrial or lithophytic orchid (grows on rocks or ground).
Status: Protected under CITES Appendix I (cannot be traded internationally without permits).
Bright, filtered light is ideal. Avoid direct harsh sunlight (especially mid-day).
Mimic the dappled light of a forest edge or rocky slope under trees.
Day: 20–28°C (68–82°F)
Night: 15–18°C (59–65°F)
Key tip: A slight drop in night temperature is important to trigger blooming.
Use a well-draining, airy mix such as:
Medium orchid bark
Perlite
Charcoal
Crushed limestone (optional)
Sphagnum moss (in moderation)
Avoid soggy or dense media — roots rot easily.
Water regularly when the medium begins to dry out (don’t let it dry completely).
Avoid watering into the crown to prevent rot.
Flush the pot occasionally to remove salt build-up.
Use distilled, rain, or low-mineral water if possible.
Needs moderate to high humidity (50–70% or more).
Ensure good air circulation to avoid fungal/bacterial infections.
Do not mist heavily into the crown — it can cause rot.
Use a balanced orchid fertilizer (e.g., 20-20-20) at ¼ to ½ strength.
Apply every 2–3 weeks during active growth.
Flush the pot with clean water between fertilizing to avoid salt buildup.
Repot every 1–2 years, or when the medium breaks down.
Best done after flowering or during active root growth.
When dividing, ensure at least 3–4 growths per division — they’re slow to recover.
